The anti-mainstream zombie survival game, The Evil Within 2, was released in October 2017, but in 2021, this game should still be your top priority in multiplayer zombie game PS4.
The Evil Within 2 itself is a video game that was successfully developed by the Tango Gameworks company, which was then published successfully by Bethesda Softwortks, which is the sequel to the first The Evil Within which was launched in 2014.
This game was released for PS4, Windows, and Xbox One. In general, this game received positive reviews from various gamers such as the first series, where especially the praise came in terms of atmosphere, visuals, and gameplay.
Unfortunately, the criticism that was received came from the storyline and characters developed by Tango, where critics thought the storyline and characters were not that interesting. And now, let’s just get into The Evil Within 2 review.
The Evil Within 2 Review: Storyline
Since this video game has drawn criticism, especially in terms of its storyline, let’s try to find out more. The story begins with Sebastian Castellanos who decided to leave the Crimson City Police Department.
Now Castellanos lives alone, because his only child, Lily, died in a house fire and Myra, his wife, left him. Living with various life pressures and traumas, Castellanos became familiar with alcohol, liquor and the night world to comfort his sadness.
He spent a lot of time at the bar. However, at one time when he was trying to forget all the bad memories on his mind, Castellanos met Mobius.
He said that Lily was still alive. Kemudin, Castellanos were invited by Mobius to meet with Administrator at the secret Mobius facility, where he informed him that Lily was actually being used for a new STEM system for the sake of simulating a new city in America, namely Union. Unfortunately, Mobius lost contact with Lily and lost control of the simulation. Finally, Castellanos agreed to help them by entering the simulation.
Within the Union, Castellanos, instead of finding a city as beautiful as Administrator had said, he found that it was filled with monsters. Not only that, he also saw for himself that there was a photographer who had supernatural powers to kill the Mobius operators.
Finally, there were some Mobius personnel who were still alive, namely Liam O’Neal, Julian Sykes, and Yukiko Hoffman. These three people help Sebastian to find Lily. After being investigated, it turned out that Lily was kidnapped by a photographer named Stefano who had an interest in taking pictures of other people when they were about to die.
Stefano tells Sebastian that in the beginning, he kidnapped Lily on orders from another party, but that he eventually wanted her to be kept by himself for exploitation.
Finally, Sebastian manages to kill Stefano, but suddenly, Myra appears and takes Lily. Sebastian is eventually taken to an unknown fortress area, where he meets a priest named Theodore Wallace. The priest tries to convince Sebastian to join him, so that Sebastian can snatch Lily from Myra.
Sebastian refuses the offer, and he is finally banished outside the Union in the forest. There, he met a Mobius operator named Esmeralda Torres. Esmeralda tells Sebastian that he, Kidman, Myra, and Theodore have allied to get Lily out of STEM and destroy Mobius internally. Unfortunately, the plan doesn’t go according to plan because Theodore is mentally unstable and kidnaps Lily for his own sake.
Finally, Sebastian has a strong desire to face Theodore head-on. On the way, he meets Liam who has been brainwashed, forcing Sebastian to kill him. Sebastian fainted as soon as he met Theodore because he used Sebastian’s guilt as a powerful weapon. Finally, Sebastian is convinced that he is actually innocent of what happened to Lily and he needs to focus on saving her.
Long story short, Sebastian follows Myra so that he can protect Lily from the madness of Myra who is obsessed so that Lily can be locked in STEM. Sebastian finally got Lily out of STEM, but Myra didn’t want it, he wanted to destroy Mobius and replace Lily as the core of STEM. In the real world, Administrator orders Kidman to kill Sebastian, but Kidman actually helps Sebastian and Lily get out of STEM, and Myra continues her plan to kill Administrator and all Mobius operators, except Kidman.

The Evil Within 2 Review: Gameplay
When we talk about the gameplay in The Evil Within 2, then we have to talk about the complexity that is in it. This survival horror game still uses a third-person perspective. You as the player will play the character as Sebastian Castellanos. Your mission here is to save Sebastian’s daughter, Lily, from being trapped by the Union world. Sebastian will enter the world of Union via STEM so he can save his daughter.
In the game, you will find three difficulty modes that you can choose from. The three difficulty modes consist of Casual, Survival and Nightmare. The Casual difficulty mode is a difficulty mode recommended by the producer, Shinji Mikami. Meanwhile, for the Nightmare difficulty mode, is a recommended difficulty mode for gamers who really enjoyed the difficulty game in the previous game.
There are several changes from The Evil Within the first series, where the second series has a map with a larger view. Besides that, in the second series, you also get more ways that you can use to experience level up. Not only that, you will also be provided with an item called The Communicator.
This item is used to be able to find out the objectives, resources, and your enemies who will be displayed in the game. There are also Resonance points, which you can use to get clues about what is really happening and has happened in the world of the Union. If you like exploring infinite game worlds, you don’t need to worry, because in The Evil Within 2, you are free to explore the map area. During this exploration, you can also take on side missions while finding rare resources.
When you get tired of exploring, you can immediately get into battle with intimidating enemies. Use the weapons you have, or use stealth so you can prevent yourself from being noticed by the enemy while sneaking and dodging, where you might be able to kill them without them noticing.
In order to make it to the end in this game, you need consistency and craftsmanship. You will need to collect all the resources you can find in order to create new items, such as ammunition. Crafting this new item can be done at any time, but if you do it at your desk, you’ll need less crafting materials.
In this game, there is also a customization system, namely Green Gel. Green Gel was introduced in the first game. You can use it to make adjustments to Sebastian’s abilities. In general, Green Gel consists of 5 different indicators, namely combat, health, stealth, recovery, and athleticism.
The Evil Within 2 Review: Development
The beginning of the development of the video game The Evil Within 2 was carried out in 2015. This development was carried out when the content development for the first game had been completed by Tango Gameworks. In addition, there are changes in the organizational structure, where Shinji Mikami resigns from the position of director and becomes the producer of the game, as well as as a supervisor in game development. Shinji Mikami argues that the development time span of this second series is faster when compared to the development of the first series.
In order to fill the void in the role of director, John Johanas finally became the director. Meanwhile, the storyline was created by Syoji Ishimine and Trent Haaga. They want to focus more on making gamers easier to understand the story, because in the first series, there were a number of critics who said that the storyline was more complicated.
In this second series, there are more logical reasons to explain various events. Of course, The Evil Within 2 still maintains a horror atmosphere full of blood, to be displayed dominantly. Not only that, there is also a psychological aspect of horror, because this game mainly tells about personal stories.
The Evil Within 2 was created on a STEM machine, an offshoot of id Tech. Meanwhile, the first series was made on Tech 5. STEM itself was developed specifically by Tango for the creation of this game.

The Evil Within 2 Review: Reception
Successfully becoming one of the most popular zombie games, The Evil Within 2 received “generally favorable” reviews from Metacritic. Destructoid gave it a 7/10 score from one of its reviewers, who argued that in general, The Evil Within 2 is a fun game and definitely has an audience, although there are a few mistakes.
Meanwhile, on the other hand, there were comments from Electronic Gaming Monthly who argued that initially he didn’t expect to play a sequel to The Evil Within, but changed his mind when he jumped straight into the game. Even though this game has a number of problems, when entering the world of this game, there are lots of adventures that make gamers feel attracted to this world.
According to other parties, The Evil Within 2 has a number of new ideas being developed, improved flow to explain the logic of doing everything, but because fighting is not the main focus, this game will be quite disappointing for gamers who are only looking for the sensation of survival horror.
